After The 39 Steps, 'The Hound' is my most produced play, with 4 professional productions in its orginal, open-air, promenade format, including at Lancaster Duke's Playhouse, (1999) and for The Isle of Man Arts Council, in 2007, (pictured above). Following its publication in 2012, there have been countless amateur productions around the world, mostly as indoor theatre. It suits itself very well to a static, indoor stage format, as, having all the action take place in one 'meta-location' - i.e. Dartmoor, some very simple stage design is all that is needed to localise each scene.
It is a good choice of play for a largish cast, having a host of eccentric and entertaining characters, both male and female. The original production managed with 8 actors, doubling frequently. There is lots of humour - the action opens with an old-style, stage melodrama relating the legend - and then there is serious suspense when needed, especially towards the end...
